Living in a sustainable and efficient house is possible. And, as you can see, look at the building that we show you today: a house completely built with ecological materials the one that does not lack detail. It is an example of architecture for the future.
This splendid house is located in the Garraf region, in the province of Barcelona. And it is not a house in the countryside, since it is located in the urban center, specifically in the historic center of a municipality in the area. It has been designed by the architect Marta Bosch and built by Arquima, a company specialized in passive construction that shows us that it is also possible live in the city in a sustainable house.
The key? The entire building is constructed with ecological and natural materials. The structure is a wooden framework, and the main walls and the floors were made with large-format panels, manufactured in a workshop and then transported to the place where the house is located. The assembly was made in a short space of time without excessive complications.
The wood, essential in this sustainable house
For its great qualities, for being a natural and ecological material, and for its thermal and acoustic properties, Wood was the material chosen to build this sustainable house. It is renewable, recyclable and totally respectful with the environment, so that a more suitable material could not be found.
That's why this sustainable house is made up of wood panels, with thermal insulation inside and OSB boards of wood chips pressed on the outside. The pressed wood also offers a very modern and special decorative finish.
The result is a house in which the interior environment is perfect, thanks to the great insulating capacity of wood. It helps to maintain the interior temperature and, in addition, controls the acoustic level dampening the noises.
As for the interior linings, the wood floors and the staircase is combined in certain spaces with laminated plasterboard on the walls and ceilings.
It goes without saying that all the wood used in the construction of the house comes from forests managed in a totally sustainable way.
An intelligent distribution
Built under the parameters of the passive architecture (one that combines bioclimatic resources and energy efficiency to achieve sustainability), this wonderful house has a central courtyard that gives the interiors enough daylight and direct ventilation.
The house has 215 square meters distributed on three floors, well connected to the outside. In it two people can live and work in a comfortable way. The ground floor has direct access to the garden. In it, the workspace, a bathroom and a garage with enough space for two cars.
On the first floor are the rest of the common areas of the house (the kitchen and the living room with dining room), as well as the bedroom and bathroom. The orientation to the south of the room gives these spaces of light, views and a very comfortable environment.
On the second floor there is a space that can accommodate two bedrooms and a bathroom.
The importance of isolation
One of the pillars on which the architecture of this sustainable house is based is the insulation of the interior. As the walls of the house and the roof are very insulating, they help to conserve the temperature of the interior, with the consequent saving of energy (and money) that this supposes. In fact, the building has an energy rating of A.
Other details that affect the sustainability of the house are the treatment of the facades, some of them clad with wood and with ventilated chamber, or windows. The latter, especially those that receive the sun's rays for most of the day, are provided with adjustable wooden slats. Thanks to them it is possible to control solar radiation and avoid overheating in summer.
All these insulation solutions contribute to create comfortable, welcoming and sustainable interiors energetically speaking.
At the time of providing the house with energy for domestic hot water, a high performance aerothermal apparatus. This is a renewable and efficient alternative.
Although adequate orientation to the south and insulation are able to avoid the loss of heat from the interiors, it is necessary to have a heating system. He opted for a biomass boiler and, according to the spaces, by low temperature radiators or a radiant floor system.
