Badajoz is one of the two provinces that make up the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, and is the capital of the province with the same name. It was founded in the 9th century during the Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula.
Its capital has a population of 146.832 inhabitants, according to INE 2008) which represents the 21,43% of the total population of its province and the 13,38 of the Extremaduran community, being with it the most populated municipality of the entire community and of the hydrographic basin of the Guadiana, one of the most important rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, that crosses the city from east to west.
It is also the third provincial capital with the largest number of inhabitants of the South Sub-region, after Madrid and Albacete. Its municipal area occupies an area of 1,470 km and is the third largest in Spain after Cáceres and Lorca.
Badajoz has a continental Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic influence, due to the proximity of the Portuguese coast. The winters are mild, with minimums that rarely fall below the 0 °, and summers are hot, with maximums that sometimes approach 45 ° C.
