Lugo is one of the four provinces that make up the community of Galicia and also the capital city of the province. Its limits are to the north with the Cantabrian Sea, to the west with the province of La Coruña and Pontevedra, to the south with Orense and to the east with the Principality of Asturias and the province of León.
It is the largest of the four Galician provinces and besides the capital, it also has large population centers such as Monforte, Vivero, Ribadeo, Villalba, Sarria, Chantada and Mondoñedo. It is the third in number of inhabitants, with 355.549, surpassing only Orense.
The city was founded between the years 26 and 12 aC and was baptized in the beginning by Lucus Augusti, in honor of César Augusto, it is therefore the oldest capital of Galicia. As for its relief, it is located in a region of mountains, rounded, old and not very high, it is located on a plateau, at a height of about 465 meters above sea level, at the foot of which is the course of the River Miño. Account with 95.416 inhabitants, reason why it is the fourth city of Galicia (1 of January of 2008, source: INE).
In it we can visit one of the best conserved treasures in Spain: the Wall of Lugo. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and is considered the best preserved and most beautiful wall of the Roman era, it is the only one that remains intact.
